sustainability – woerden
The corona outbreak caused peak crowds in Intratuin garden centres. But at the head office in Woerden, people were also not sitting still.
The lighting was replaced in part of the building. “With sustainability, energy savings and a quality boost, we kill three birds with one stone,” says Arie Breedveld, building and exhibition hall manager at Intratuin.
With 52 garden centres, Intratuin is the market leader in the Netherlands. There are also branches in Belgium and Germany. “During this corona time, people are very busy with their garden and house.” At the head office, on average only about 20% of the 120 employees were in the office at the same time.
Intratuin continues to focus on making its head office more sustainable.
Lighting is one of the spearheads. “GRB Verlichting developed an appealing proposal for the common areas, toilets, the grand café and the emergency exits. Reuse was an important starting point. Where possible, existing fluorescent luminaires have been converted to LED while retaining the housing. “This was not possible with the recessed spotlights; the technical lifespan had been reached. “These were replaced in their entirety. Furthermore, the lighting is partly equipped with motion sensors. There are now no unnecessary lights on in the toilets. That makes a significant difference in energy consumption.” The replacement was carried out by a permanent GRB mechanic. “He quickly became familiar with the building and communicated well. At the end of each day, everything was neatly cleaned up. The entire operation took just three weeks.”
In addition to significant energy savings, the light quality has been substantially improved. “The light in the toilet areas is now bright white,” said Breedveld. “I get a lot of positive feedback about it. The toilets even seem more spacious.”
Intratuin’s objectives have been achieved. “With sustainability, energy savings and a quality boost, we kill three birds with one stone.”
