“For a complex and large-scale redevelopment like Kromme Schaft 3 in Houten, we were involved in thinking about the transformation at an early stage,” says Wout van Heerdt, our project manager for this project.
He had his work cut out for him
Van den Pol is responsible for the complete electrical installation, LED lighting in the common areas, fire alarm system, and data installation. “In a large new-build project, you can often copy the installation design per unit one-to-one. Not here, because due to the layout of the building, virtually all apartments are different. Our BIM modeler had his hands full.”

Mechanics reap the benefits of thorough preparation. A lot of installation was done using pluggable components. The use of wireless switches also kept things moving at a good pace. Not only do we install them faster, but there is also no dust or noise from drilling and milling. That makes working much more pleasant for our people. In short: as far as Van den Pol is concerned, wireless is the new standard.
Anticipating grid congestion
Grid congestion is increasingly causing impediments. “The allocated capacity for the geothermal heat pump systems at De Kromme Schaft is on the tight side. Whether this actually causes problems will only become clear in practice. Therefore, an electric heating boiler has been installed that steps in if necessary.” To make that possible, we have prepared for the placement of a generator.
Successful examples
According to Wout, this is yet another example of the impact of the congested power grid. “Fortunately, it is almost always possible to configure the installations in such a way that sustainability upgrades, expansion, or new construction remain feasible. This requires a tailored approach each time, depending on the specific situation. However, the number of successful examples is increasing rapidly. As a result, we have an increasing number of best practices that can be applied in similar situations.”
Good for the future
At De Kromme Schaft, Van den Pol deploys apprentice mechanics from its own company school. “Under the guidance of experienced colleagues, they are assigned a part of the project. While it may feel a bit awkward at first, their self-confidence quickly grows and they ask for more responsibility. It is great to see and good for the future of the trade and of our company.”
