ENERGY MANAGEMENT TACKLES GRID CONGESTION

Utrecht Central Plaza at Jaarbeursplein is being completely renovated, made more sustainable and expanded by contractor Ten Brinke. By the end of 2026, the vast majority of the 22,000 m2 of space in the complex will be occupied by De Volksbank. Utrecht Central Plaza then meets high sustainability requirements, including BREEAM Excellent, WELL Gold and Energy Label A++++.
Broad specialization
At Utrecht Central Plaza, Van den Pol uses her expertise in a broad manner. “In addition to the complete electrical installations, we are responsible for the lighting plus installations for fire alarms, evacuation, access control, data and CCTV,” says Kees Bouman, business unit manager at Van den Pol. “We also take care of panels, battery storage and emergency power supply.”
New reality
Grid congestion is also the new reality in this project. Because the complex wasn’t fully occupied prior to the redevelopment, grid operator Stedin reduced the contracted capacity to 450 kWh. However, in the new situation, double that amount is needed, and even more during peak periods.
The key player
In order to be able to use Utrecht Central Plaza, Van den Pol is installing an energy management system (EMS). “This acts as a key player that controls the various assets: solar panels, battery storage, heat pumps and an emergency power generator,” explains project leader Roelf van Wolfswinkel. “Based on current consumption and available power, the EMS ensures optimal interaction between these components.”
