DC Amsterdam West
Dealing with grid congestion
As a permanent partner of Heembouw, Van den Pol Elektrotechniek is responsible for the basic electrical installation plus lighting at DC Amsterdam West. “Each of the four building parts has its own distribution box with consumption meter and can be used independently,” says project leader John Gielen. “The new building is all-electric and has energy label A++++.
BREEAM has been the standard for distribution centres in which Van den Pol is involved for some time now. “This DC has a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ certification,” says work planner Reinier Oppelaar. “A requirement of BREEAM is that the outdoor lighting is not on between 23:00 and 07:00, in order to disturb the fauna as little as possible. Partly at the request of area developer SADC, this lighting is equipped with sensors. As a result, the light is only on outside the time slot when it is necessary.”
As with many other projects, DC Amsterdam West is experiencing the consequences of grid congestion. “The energy connection will not be available until the fourth quarter of 2025. In order to be able to use the DC anyway, Sunrock is installing an innovative energy system consisting of more than 3,400 solar panels, batteries and a generator. We are integrating this system into the building.
Van den Pol receives many questions about how to deal with the restrictions caused by grid congestion. “Our Green Team immediately supports an integral vision,” says Oppelaar. “Almost all users can continue working, but they have to take action by saving energy and making smart use of the available grid capacity. Batteries often play a key role in this.”
